Floyd Sweet,
President
Floyd Sweet, a
retired teacher of 39 years, was named the
Alberta Council on Aging President at the
AGM, May 29th, 2007.
The Vermillion
resident has been involved with ACA for
three years and was also active in the
Canadian Association of Retired Teachers,
the Vermillion disability services
organization, FOCUS, and served seven years
on the executive of the Alberta Council for
Disability Services.
In addition to
his volunteer work, Floyd has a wide range
of hobbies. He is an avid photographer
and enjoys gardening and attending the
theatre with his wife of 39 years. He
also enjoys building with fieldstones, and
just finished a nine-foot bridge on his
property and helped the local Rotary club
build a 30-foot commemorative stone wall.
Paul Lemay,
Vice President
Paul Lemay is a
native Albertan, born in High Prairie.
He attended school in High Prairie, Enilda,
Falher and Grande Prairie. Following a
Masters Degree in Biological Science from
the University of Alberta, Paul taught
Biology and Nursing Anatomy and Physiology
at Grande Prairie Regional College for 32
years. In addition to teaching he was
involved in several work related and
community volunteer programs. He
served as President of the Alberta College
Faculties Association from 1976-1978.
he chaired the College Faculty Negotiating
Committee for several years and was involved
on the Academic Staff Faculty Evaluation
Team. Paul also served two years on
the University of Alberta Senate. In
the community her serves on the Canfor
Public Advisory Committee and also serves as
a public member on the Council of Alberta
Professional Foresters. Paul has been
the ACA Director of Region 1 for the past 5
years and served on the ACA Board.
Farming has been
a hobby and past-time for the last 40 years
including cattle and grain. the cattle
enterprise is slowly coming to an end to
allow for some winter travel. Paul and
his wife, Myrna, have three children and ten
grandchildren. he is at a stage of
attending grandchildren's weddings and
graduations from high-school.
Bernie Lemay,
Secretary/Treasurer
Jeannette
Vatter, Past President
Jeannette has
been a long-time advocate for Seniors in her
community of Drayton Valley and in the past
years has worked locally and provincially
for this cause. She is often called
upon on others' behalf in matters of health,
housing and other Seniors' issues.
Jeannette spent
25 years employed in the oil industry and
after an early retirement has volunteered
her time towards Seniors' issues and local
community projects. Presently as the
President of the Brazeau Seniors Foundation,
she wrote and produced an orientation video
to welcome Seniors to the Seniors' lodge.
For the past 12 years Jeannette has served
as the Executive Director of the local
Community Foundation on a volunteer basis.
This foundation serves the community well in
addition to having many ongoing projects.
She served as a member of the Community
Health Council and as the program secretary
for the Seniors Wellness Program, which
operates out of the 55+ Recreation Centre.
Jeannette helps Seniors enhance their lives
by becoming more computer literate.
She instructs Seniors at the Recreation
Centre in the introduction to computers,
including e-mail and internet applications.
Her oldest student was an 81 year old man
who, with Jeannette's help, has become very
competent on the computer. In
addition, Jeannette has volunteered
countless hours writing, typing and editing
the memoirs of two Seniors in the community.
Jeannette's work experience has relayed well
into her ACA work, especially her computer
training as she was able to develop a
database programs for the membership of ACA.
During her time
with ACA, Jeannette served as Vice-president
for one year and President for two years
(2005-2007) and is currently the Past
President. Jeannette also chaired the
Senior Friendly™ Committee and was active on
the Health and Policy Advisory Committees.
In 2001
Jeannette received the Minister's Senior
Service Award and in 2000 received the
Chamber of Commerce Spirit Award.
In spite of an
extremely busy schedule, Jeannette enjoys
travelling and has been to many parts of the
world-the furthest being Africa and
Argentina. |
